Shades First Day Hike Oatmeal Bars recipe

Several folks at the First Day Hike at Shades asked for the oatmeal bar cookie recipe.  It has now been dubbed Shades First Day Hike Oatmeal Bars and is as follows:

Shades First Day Hike Oatmeal Bars

1/2  cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup whole wheat flour

13 cup sugar

12 cup brown sugar

12 teaspoon baking soda

12 teaspoon salt

12 teaspoon ground cinnamon

14 teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg

1 teaspoon vanilla

1large egg

12 cup butter, melted and cooled

2 cups rolled oats (not instant)

¾ cup dried cranberries

¾ cup raisins (sultanas are best)

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F Line an 8×8-inch baking pan with parchment paper (optional, but aids in getting cookies out of pan).
  2. Whisk together flour, sugar, brown sugar, baking soda, salt and spices in a large bowl.
  3. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and stir in vanilla, egg and melted butter until smooth. Stir in oats and raisins until they are evenly distributed.
  4. Pour dough into prepared pan and spread into an even layer with a spatula or your fingers. Bake for about 20 to 25 minutes, or until bars are set and the center no longer looks wet. Edges will be golden brown. Cool pan on a wire rack before slicing into rectangular bars.

Give it up for Turkey Run & Shades

The silent auction held during the Eagles in Flight weekend is fast approaching - January 29th and 30th. This is the most significant fund raiser of the year for the Friends of Turkey Run and Shades State Parks. Any items that you want to donate for the auction will be appreciated.

Please look over the stuff in your closets, on your shelves or in the garage and think about which items need to be appreciated by someone else. Maybe it’s a Christmas gift that you really don’t want; or a book that you will never read again; or a kitchen gadget that was great when your kids were home but now, not so much. It could be an old toy that someone collects_ a work of art that you just don’t have room for.

Folks who attend the Eagles in Flight weekend have come to look forward to the eclectic and unusual that comprise our auction. So let’s not disappoint this year. Items will be accepted from now up to noon on January 29th; and can be dropped off at the Nature Center from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Thursday through Monday. The Center is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday during the winter. Or, if needed, we will pick up your item; call 765-569-5148 to arrange a time.

The Friends of Turkey Run & Shades is a not-for-profit organization and a receipt for your contribution will be provided should you need it for tax purposes. The funds we raise are used to support the Nature Center, to maintain trails and other resources within the parks, to sustain the pioneer garden at the Lusk Property and for special projects. This year work will begin on the restoration of the kitchen at the Lusk Home. Your donation of items for the auction will contribute to the success this project.
